ISTQB was still no that pervasive but I think I would have done that if someone had asked me. And so I met James Bach at STANZ 2005. Of all things (and he will not remember) I talked to him about US politics and G W Bush! Looking back I still don't know how that makes me feel. I think I remember that he must have been in a gracious mood or just couldn't be bothered with politics. Anyway that was probably the 1st time I was touched by the whole "the book is wrong" idea. There was zero community down here at the time. It was still years till I'd meet Brian Osman, Richard Robinson and you for that matter!

It took me years to actually fully understand what James was on about. And I don't mean that in the way that I understood all he said (I still don't) but rather in accepting that what I did was at least in part not really what i should be doing and that i had a journey that I only had begun on.

From that point with the help of you guys we have changed the understanding of testing in Wellington and NZ. Everything we have achieved over the years had that incendiary moment from taking something James said. And believe me I have had the moments where he told me to "take a sexual departing" or where I got angry at him for being the more experienced debater. But in all that one thing remained and you pointed it out, he remained true to himself. And if you add that to the sheer immenseness of what he did for our community Down Under (and Michael Bolton also deserves honorable mention here and there are more in subsequent years) I am just happy to take the odd moment that I might not agree with him.

Love or hate James but he has done more for the testing industry than pretty much any other individual. Doesn't absolve him but it should make you think twice. And to be honest if he mentions me in any way in his talks/slides I'll be happy to be there. Even if he says I'm a tosser or worse. It means that at least I have engaged and that what I said was important enough to warrant a stance. And it always is an invitation to a discussion. If I take that opportunity is up to me.

Oliver

Oliver Erleweinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16862713267611644928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7250447306574801643.post-22134073466037696692016-10-02T17:56:53.524+13:002016-10-02T17:56:53.524+13:00Wow, agree with every word :)
